Das Nähkästchen Index

Third day

Posted on 29th Jul 2016

The third day of 'das Nähkästchen' was quite eventful.

According to the request of most of the seniors we showed the film 'Geierwally'.Fr. Fischer was very happy when it had been anounced that Geierwally would be on the show. She brought kind of an opera glass with LED to see the film better. Most of the audiences had been women.

Before the film had started , we began with a short film over Velden am Wörther See. The film was shot during the last weekend. Therefore the viewers got a feel, how Velden looks like now. As most of them has lost their mobility, it had been long since they have visited this famous place surrounding 'lake Wörther'.

After the film was started I went to Herr Staub I have burnt one documentary film over the life of Joseph Schmidt, and few of his famous songs , like 'ein Lied geht in die Welt' and so on and on.

Hr Staub took the DVd and told me 'This is Gold'!

When I went to his room I found out he was struggling with his laptop to turn on the DVD.

I helped him turning the DVD on, the documentary started with street shots of 'Cernovic'.
Hr. Jumped out of his wheel chair and moved himself in front of the monitor.

I noticed he was crying .

He told me , now he can show his city to his daughter Christina.

He along with his family was driven away from Bukowina , a German enclave due to a treaty between Hitler and Stalin. They had to leave everything behind and as a refugee came first to Ratibor and stayed inside a Fransiscan monastery turned into a refugee camp.

He was singing along with Joseph Schmidt and said , this Tenor was born in a wrong time.

Joseph Schmidt was born also in Bukowina (davidena) as Hr.... When he was 20 he got the role of the Cantor in a Synagogue. Cantors are special people who lead the religious prayer with deep devotion and sincerity. They are asking for the mercy of the God on behalf of the community.

Joseph Schmidt rose to prominence during the 30's. Although he was Jew his concerts were booked and he performed in the Carnegie Hall.

When the war started he went to France, and then went on foot to Switzerland. Along with all the refugees, he was living in the camp, got sick and died in the year of 1942.

According to Hr. Staub, the turbulant times before and after of the second world war has wiped out traces of many noteworthy geniouses.

Joseph Schmidt was among them.
